Eligible Students

The Master’s Scholarship awarded for study at the University of Portsmouth is open to:

• Students who earn a First Class honours diploma. Current students and graduates from the 2021/2022 university set are not eligible.

• Those who have accepted the university’s offer to enrol in a master’s program, either full- or part-time, beginning in September 2023 or January 2024. 

• Students who meet the conditions to be classed as UK students for fee purposes (EU and international students are not eligible).

Eligible Courses

Masters programs are offered both on-campus and online.

 They include LLM, MA, MSC, and MRes courses. Some ineligible courses include Distance Learning, GradCert, Integrated Master’s, MSC Physiotherapy MD, PgCert, and Prof Doc.

• For the duration of their course, students must enrol for up to 180 credits.

• The approved list of acceptable courses is subject to suspension, change, and approval.

• Students who enrol in a full-time, approved master’s program for two years will only be eligible for a £3,000 first-year stipend.

Academic Criteria

Candidates that are selected must have earned a first-class honours degree. Applicants must meet the entry requirements for the course. 


For courses starting in September 2023

Individuals looking to be considered for this must:

• Hold an offer on an eligible course accepted by Friday, June 30th, 2023.

• Have applied for the scholarship by Friday, 30th June 2023.

Scholarships will be allocated, and students will obtain notification by mid-late August 2023.

For courses Starting in January 2024

Individuals looking to be considered must:

• Hold an offer on an eligible course which must be accepted by Friday, November 24th 2023.

• Have applied for the scholarship by Friday, 24th November 2023.

Scholars will be awarded by Friday, December 15th, and students will be notified. 

Application Process

An applicant would need to complete the application to be considered. After that, one must send proof of their undergraduate coursework. 

Operational Terms and Conditions

• The scholarship will be made to only successful eligible students on eligible courses.

• Only successful qualifying students enrolled in approved courses will be awarded the scholarship.  

• Successful candidates would have to enrol fully in their course to maintain their eligibility for the scholarship. 

• If a student changes to a postgraduate or an ineligible full-time programme, they will no longer be eligible for the scholarship. 

• Scholarships are contingent upon recipients accepting an offer of admission to the university and enrolling in an approved master’s level programme. 

• The £3,000 scholarship will contribute towards one’s tuition fee (depending on your course duration, you could get half the amount yearly).

• Suspended students are no longer eligible for the grant. 

• The Government Postgraduate Loans Scheme is still open to applicants with the University of Portsmouth Masters Scholarship.
